A traditional khmer wedding
A: I
haven’t seen you for ages, where did you go?
B: Oh, honey! I had the most wonderful
experience. I attended the wedding of my beloved friends.
A: Whose
wedding was it?
B: The
groom was Seyha and the bride was Pisey.
A: What
caused them to get married?
B: They understand each other for three
years. I mean they both read mind each other for a long time and they became
engaged last year, but they wanted to wait until they both had graduated from
the university before getting married. Anyway, I thought you would like to hear
about the traditional Khmer Wedding.
A: Yes,
sure. What happened on their wedding day?
B: First, the guests of both sides arrive
at the special place. About 7 o’clock the married teacher starts to march of
presents to the bride’s house. During the march, all the guests carry fruit,
food, cake, meat, wine, vegetables, etc. When the guests arrive at the bride’s
house, the ushers meet them and help them to find seats. After that the guests
have special breakfast happily.
A: What
kinds of clothes do Khmer people wear during the wedding day?
B: They
always wear traditional clothes such as Hol, pharmong, etc.
A: During
the ceremony, what things does the groom always give the bride?
B: The groom usually gives the bride a
wedding diamond ring, necklace, bracelet and the bride sometimes gives the
groom a diamond ring too.
A: Do
they have a party after traditional celebration?
B: Yes,
they do. The last event is the wedding reception. There is a big party after
the ceremony.
A: Where
do they usually celebrate the wedding reception?
B: they
sometimes celebrate at the bride’s house or at the modern restaurant.
A: What
kinds of presents do the guests bring to offer the bride and the groom?
B: The guests usually bring money and
souvenir such as: clocks, pictures, pens, etc to offer new couple. Angkor Beer,
Tiger Beer, and ABC Beer are usually served and everyone eats, drinks, sings,
and dances happily for many hours.
